Why Use Lead As A Sound Barrier?

Lead sheet serves makes the ideal sound barrier (attenuator) because it is both dense and relatively flexible. To achieve the same sound transmission loss, other accoustical materials in its class much be applied in greater thicknesses, and, as they get thicker, each material has a point at which it reaches a level of stiffness that negates the effectiveness of its density.

The stepped line indicates the break between materials that are limp enough to use their weight efficiently (below the line) and those that are stiff enough to lose effectiveness of their weight (above the line). As you can see, lead sheet provides effective sound attenuation even when applied in very thin layers. And, in all instances, lead sheet is effective in a fraction of the thickness of the next-most effective soundproofing material.
